Alakanuk might have entered the Yukon Delta Conference 1A tournament as a relative unknown, but they didn’t finish the three-day event that way.

En route to ending one of the state’s longest dynasties, Alakanuk punched its ticket to the Class 1A state tournament by edging out the Scammon Bay in the championship game of the Yukon Delta tournament on Friday.

With the loss, Scammon Bay’s seven-year hold on the conference championship ended.

Despite the loss in the finals, the SBHS boys extended their string of state tournament appearances. Scammon Bay advanced to the state tournament for a ninth straight time by beating St. Mary’s by two in the second-place game on Saturday.

In addition to taking second in the conference standings, the Eagles gave Scammon Bay a sweep of the Academic Award honors. Both the Keggatmiut HS boys’ and girls’ teams won the prestigious honors.
