Smith, JV girls sweep two from Nome

Smith pumped in a game-high 13 points and Dorothy Bukowski chipped in seven more on Saturday afternoon and led the Bethel Regional High School Lady Warriors to a 33-26 victory and a two-game sweep of the rival Nome-Beltz Lady Nanooks.

Bethel didn’t waste any time in taking complete control in the second game of the weekend twinbill. Backed by eight first-half points from Smith, the BRHS girls outscored Nome by a 20-10 clip in the initial two quarters.

They never looked back from there.

Smith and Bukowski combined for seven points in the third and enabled the Lady Warriors to build a 27-18 cushion at the start of the final frame.

As a team, Bethel picked up points from seven points in the contest. In addition to Smith and Bukowksi, the BRHS girls collected four points from Nina Kashatok and Madison Smith, and two apiece from Maria Tulik and Gabrielle Fredricks. Meagan Kameroff added one.

Bethel claimed a thrilling 38-36 victory over Nome on Friday, thanks to a 9-4 run in the fourth quarter.

The Lady Warriors had entered the final stanza trailing by a 32-29 margin.

Nome-Beltz’s Daynon Medlin helped the Lady Nanooks get off to a quick start. She scored seven of her 11 points in the opening frame and staked Nome to a 13-4 start.

The Lady Warriors fought their way back over the next two quarters. Keyed by baskets from Arianna Smith, Fiola Dema and Kameroff, Bethel posted a 25-19 run in the second and third quarters.

Dema came up huge for BRHS in the fourth. She scored five of her team-high 12 points in the frame. Madison Smith added two, while Bukowski and Tulik each chipped in a free throw.

Arianna Smith and Bukowksi both closed out the game with eight points. Madison Smith chipped in six.
